Head Coach John Delaney

Former Quinnipiac baseball standout John Delaney will serve in his first season as the team's new Head Coach. Delaney was a four-time All-Northeast Conference selection, including First Team honors in each of his final three seasons, before being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

Delaney completed his Quinnipiac career with 206 hits, good for fourth place all-time at Quinnipiac, while also totaling 34 doubles, tying him with former teammate Wilson Matos '06 for third place all-time. As a senior in 2008, Delaney led the Bobcats in most offensive categories including home runs (9), runs batted in (40), hits (66), runs scored (49), at-bats (196), batting average (.337), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.571) and triples (2). In addition, his .357 (20-56) batting average with runners in scoring position and 13, two-out RBI's also led the team. Delaney posted a team-best 20 multiple-hit games, including seven games with three or more. His 12 multiple-RBI games also led the Bobcats while his 15 doubles ranked sixth all-time with his 66 hits ranking as the fifth most in Quinnipiac history in a single season.

After his selection in the 2008 MLB Draft, Delaney was rated by Baseball America as the top third base prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization while also earning the "Hardest Worker Award" at the Brewers' 2009 Spring Training. In 2010, Delaney was recognized with a Gold Glove Award nomination as a member of the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League.

In 2010, Delaney was hired as a volunteer assistant coach with Northeast Conference rival Sacred Heart University. While with the Pioneers, Delaney served as the team's assistant hitting coach and infield coach, helping Sacred Heart to the 2011 Northeast Conference Championship. In 2011, he joined the coaching staff at America East Conference institution University of Hartford. With the Hawks, Delaney served once-again as the team's assistant hitting coach and infield coach, while also working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in Hartford's athletic department.

Delaney graduated from Quinnipiac in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in marketing with a minor in entrepreneurship. A native of Hanson, Mass., Delaney currently resides in Cheshire, Conn. with his wife, Melissa.


Assistant Coach Kyle Nisson

Former Quinnipiac University baseball stand-out Kyle Nisson will rejoin the Bobcats as a volunteer assistant coach in 2013-14. Nisson graduated from Quinnipiac in 2012 following a four-year career under long-time Bobcats head coach Dan Gooley.

Following his playing career in Hamden, Nisson signed with the Worcester (Mass.) Tornadoes of the CanAm League. Nisson was an all Northeast Conference selection in 2011 and named to the College Sports Madness All-NEC Second Team in 2012. He led NCAA Division I baseball in the "Toughest To Strike Out" category in 2013, striking out five times in 171 at-bats, or roughly once every 34.2 at-bats, to lead the nation in the category.

Nisson finished his senior year tied for the team lead in hits (54), while leading the team in doubles (8), runs scored (26), on-base percentage (.377). An All-NEC Second Team selection by the conference as a junior, Nisson batted .316 (54-171) while also driving in 17 runs. He also finished the year as the second hardest batter in NCAA Division I baseball to strike out.

Behind the plate, Nisson was third among all NEC catchers as he threw out 12 runners for the year. Nisson also collected a team-high 18 multiple-hit games, including four with three or more and was one of two players in the NEC this season to put together a five-hit game. In that game, a 17-3 win against Mount St. Mary's that also stood as Head Coach Dan Gooley's 500th career victory, Nisson was 5-for-6 with a double, four RBI and five runs scored. Nisson was also named to College Sports Madness' Preseason All-NEC Team.


Assistant Coach Pat Egan

Former Quinnipiac ace Pat Egan returns to Hamden as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Egan enjoyed a four-year career under legendary head coach Skip Gooley from 2003-2007.

Egan recently completed a seven-year career in professional baseball following the 2013 season where he reached the AAA level in both the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves organizations. He began his professional career as a starter before transitioning to the bullpen. He finished his career with a record of 30-23 and 19 saves with an ERA of 3.11. Egan pitched 518 1/3 innings in 245 games and finished with 381 strikeouts. His best year came in 2013 where he split time between the Mississippi and Gwinnett Braves going 8-3 with a 2.95 ERA in 54 games with 56 strikeouts.

After graduating from Quinnipiac, Egan opened Pat Egan Professional Pitching Instruction where he founded, organized and operated private hitting and pitching clinics. Egan developed pitching programs for youths aged 8-18 to help them focus on fundamentals, pitching styles, conditioning and mental aspects of baseball.

Egan also worked with Rocky Hill High School with the basketball program. He was the Head Coach of the Freshman Basketball team from 2009-2013 and was promoted to Assistant Varsity coach for the 2013-14 season as well.

At Quinnipiac, Egan was named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2004 when he went 7-2 with a 2.54 ERA. He finished his college career with a record of 20-11, 3.95 ERA, 151 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .262.

Egan graduated from Quinnipiac with a bachelor’s degree in public relations in 2006 and currently lives in Wethersfield, Conn. with his wife, Angela, and son, Jaxon.


Mike Mergenthaler

Mike Mergenthaler enters his first season as an assistant coach of the Quinnipiac baseball team.

Mergenthaler played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization from getting drafted in 2011 until 2013. In the Arizona Rookie League, Mergenthaler batted .388 with 4 home runs, 22 runs scored and 20 RBI, and was named the 2011 San Francisco Giants Rookie League batting champion. In 2012 he played 69 games between the Augusta GreenJackets and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes where he batted .200 with 4 home runs, 10 doubles, 28 RBI and 34 runs scored.

Mergenthaler played collegiate baseball at the University of Richmond where he ranks in the Top 10 all-time in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases. He was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie team in 2008 and All-Atlantic First Team in 2011, as well as All-Atlantic 10 tournament team.

Mergenthaler currently resides in Bristol, Conn.
