coachHead Coach, Marc Pavao

Marc Pavao enters his eighth year at the helm for the Buccaneers. After serving as the assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for the Buccaneers for seven years, Pavao was named to the head coaching position prior to the 2006 season. In seven seasons, he has compiled a 236-132-2 overall record and a 100-66 mark against Sunshine State Conference opponents, including conference titles and regional appearances in 2009 and 2011.  He was named SSC Coach of the year in both those years.  In the time Pavao has been the Head Coach at Barry a total of 15 players have signed contracts to play Major League Baseball.

Pavao’s first season as the Buccaneer baseball skipper in 2006 was the best debut in school history, as Barry went 33-21-1.  After starting the 2007 season 16-19, Pavao led the Buccaneers to an outstanding finish, winning 16 of the last 21 games. The Buccaneers finished third in the SSC with a 14-10 mark and narrowly missed out on an NCAA tournament berth. In 2008, Pavao led the Bucs to a 32-19 mark. The Bucs set a team record batting .338, with several players having big seasons. The Bucs enjoyed their best season in history in 2009, going 44-11 for the year, earning a #1 national ranking, winning their first SSC Championship, and earning a #2 seeding in the South Regional. Pavao's 2010 Buccaneers went 32-19 overall and 13-11 in conference play. The Bucs posted their second 40-win season in three years in 2011, capturing the SSC title with a 20-4 mark and going 40-17 overall.  In 2012, the Bucs battled to a 23-22 mark but finished third in the SSC with a 13-9 record.

Coach Pavao has also had summer baseball coaching experiences overseas and in the U.S. In 2000 and 2001, Pavao worked with Major League Baseball International in Europe and served as a liaison with baseball federations in Germany and France. In 2003 and 2004 Pavao served as the head coach of the North Adams Steeple Cats, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in North Adams,Mass. In the summer of 2009, Pavao was an assistant coach for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League.


assistant coachPitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, Alex Gonzalez

Alex Gonzalez enters his third season as the Buccaneers pitching coach. Gonzalez helped architect a phenomenal campaign in 2011 in which Barry's pitching staff was one of the best in the nation, ranking ninth in walks per game (2.55), and 10th in hits allowed (585). The Bucs also led the SSC with a 3.38 era in route to a 40-17 mark.

Gonzalez enjoyed an outstanding four-year career with the Bucs. He is one of only three pitchers in school history to win 20 games and holds the school record for career strikeouts with 285. His senior year was one of the best in the program as he went 9-3 with a 2.36 ERA with 121 strikeouts in 101.0 innings, setting the single-season strikeout record. He was named first-team All-Sunshine State Conference and All-South Region. He signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox after his senior year with the Buccaneers and pitched in their minor league system for one year.

Prior to joining the Bucs’ staff, Gonzalez owned Evolution Sports Performance, a company which helped athletes enhance performance using ethical means. 


Assistant Coach Albert Destrade

Albert Destrade enters his first season with the Buccaneers and will be responsible for working with outfielders and hitters.

Destrade, a Miami native, managed the Fulton Railroaders, defending champions of the Ohio Valley League, during the summer of 2012.

After serving one season as an assistant in 2009, Destrade served as Head Varsity Baseball Coach for Plantation Senior High School from 2010-12. For the first time in 20 years, Destrade led the Colonels to post season District 16-7A semifinal in back-to-back seasons.

Other head coaching experience includes one season as the Plantation Senior H.S. Junior Varsity in 2008-09, as well as summer travel team programs with the “954” Crusaders and the South Florida Breakers.

After attending Lynn University from 2004-06 where he played outfield for the Fighting Knights, Destrade went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2007.

Destrade is currently a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association as well as the Coaches Advisory Committee for “Baseball 954 Magazine”.
