What is the AAU?
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-‐sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. How is the AAU divided?
The AAU is divided Into districts. The state of Arizona makes up the Arizona District. There are 56 Districts across the United States including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Does AAU Do Background Checks?
Those persons applying for an AAU Non-‐Athlete or Adult Athlete membership will be required to submit to a background screen first. Applications will not be approved instantly.
When I’m registering for a membership, there’s a place for “club code.” What do I put in there?
If you know the code associated with your club, place it in the space provided. If you are not sure or a team is not applicable to your sport, leave the space blank. Your membership application will still be processed.
I am a coach and an athlete. Do I need to purchase both an athlete and non-‐athlete membership?
Yes, the AAU requires all Non Athletes (coaches) to fill out the non-‐athlete membership application. If you participate as an athlete as well you will also need an athlete membership.
Can an Athlete or Club play in both USAV and AAU sanctioned events?
Yes, any Athlete or Club can participate in any sanctioned events offered by either organization as long as they have current membership with each separate organization. Any questions about a particular event should be directed to the Tournament Director listed for that event.
What does a Grand Prix or Super Regional event offer?
A Grand Prix and Super Regional event offers the winners free or discounted entry into AAU National Championships or West Coast Championships.
What divisions are offered at AAU tournaments?
AAU offers Open, Premier, Club, and Classic divisions. The Open division is for elite teams and is the highest, most competitive division. The Premier division is the next level designed for top teams that are in between the elite Open and Club divisions. The Club division is the middle level of play and Classic is the lower level of play.

Do you need to qualify for a national event?
No qualifications are necessary. All national tournaments are open to everyone.
